PRACTICALITIES

Asked before every long journey.

Anything else, ask us directly. The person who answers is the person who will run your trip.

ASK US ANYTHING
Is the history presented honestly, including slavery?

Yes. Historians on this journey address the trans-Saharan slave trade directly, including its scale, legacy and connection to the Gnawa tradition.

This is not avoided or softened for comfort. If you want a sanitised heritage tour, this itinerary is probably not the right fit, and we would rather say that on the planning call than on day two.

Who benefits from this tour?

The maalems, historians and host families who lead it are paid fairly as the experts they are and credited by name where appropriate.

Ask for specifics on your planning call if you want detail on how fees are distributed. We prefer that transparency to vague community claims.

Can the journey be shaped around my interests?

Every heritage journey can be shaped around your interests, whether you want deeper music, deeper history, or both.

Tell us which when you enquire and the days are built around it rather than forcing everyone through an identical script.

How much walking is involved?

Medina days involve moderate walking on cobbled, sometimes crowded lanes. Rest stops are built into the route rather than added as an afterthought.

Sturdy footwear helps. If mobility is a concern, raise it on the planning call so routes can be adjusted honestly before you book.

Is the Gnawa evening a performance or a session?

It is a private session with a maalem and troupe at close quarters, with dinner shared with the musicians rather than a staged show viewed from a distance.

The format is arranged respectfully with the artists, who are paid for their time and expertise as part of the journey price.

Which meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included, along with three dinners and two lunches as listed in the itinerary overview.

Other lunches and personal snacks are not included, giving you some flexibility on open sections of certain days.

Is the balloon flight included?

Yes. A sunrise balloon flight with breakfast after landing is included on day four, followed by the Palmeraie camel trek.

Balloon flights depend on weather. If the operator cannot fly safely, they reschedule or adjust the plan and keep you informed.

What is the group size?

Groups run up to ten guests on this heritage journey, with private transport throughout.

Smaller private departures may be possible depending on dates. Mention your party size when you enquire.

Is travel insurance required?

Travel insurance is not included and is required for international travel to Morocco.

Your policy should cover medical costs, cancellation and travel disruption for a five-day itinerary including city walking and a balloon flight.

How do I book?

Send a booking request with your preferred dates and any focus areas for music or history. The team confirms availability and pricing before charging.

If you want to discuss shaping the itinerary first, message before booking and we will arrange a planning call.
